The Russian president is scheduled to visit China next week for talks and to take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit

Russian State Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where he delivered greetings and best wishes from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting comes ahead of Putin’s scheduled four-day visit to China next week.

Volodin told Xi on Tuesday that the personal ties between the Chinese and Russian leaders have set the tone for cooperation across all areas, and committed to uphold decisions made at the leadership level of the two countries.

He also briefed Xi on the 10th session of the inter-parliamentary commission between Russia’s Federal Assembly and the National People’s Congress of China, which was held earlier in the day.

The session was dedicated to multiple issues, including counteracting Western sanctions pressure and other external interference in the domestic affairs of Russia and China. The two sides also discussed expanding trade and economic ties, and strengthening humanitarian cooperation.

After the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Beijing refused to join Western sanctions imposed on Moscow and has instead maintained close economic ties with Russia.

During his meeting with Volodin, Xi praised the strengthening cooperation between Russia and China and emphasized that the two countries should “continue the traditional friendship” and “deepen strategic mutual trust.”

The Chinese president described ties with Russia as among the most stable, mature, and strategically significant of major power relations.

The meeting comes ahead of Putin’s visit to China next week, which will include large-scale talks with Xi as well as participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. According to Russian media, it will be Putin’s longest foreign trip since 2014.
